Cigars have three things that go into its making- wrappers which constitute its major ingredient, that which gives it an identity and then fillers and binders which then make up the rest of the cigar are all made of only tobacco.

The widest leaves of a tobacco plant make up the wrappers. They are distinguished by different colors starting from a greenish tint to tan, brown. Dark brown to the almost black ones. Each color gives the cigar a definitive taste from the dry tasting green to an almost sweet tasting dark brown.

The main body of a cigar is made up of fillers. Fillers are mainly strands of leaves that are bundled together in bunches that then go to make up the inside of a cigar. These fillers give the cigar its identity as fillers can be from the bottom of the tobacco plant which then makes it mild in flavor to the filers from the top which then give it a strong flavor. Fillers are also blended to give a rich taste – so you have the perfect aroma from a combination of strong oils of tobacco from different countries. And then you have what are called the ‘pure’ cigars where tobacco from only one country goes into its making and that is prized too.

Fillers also are made up of long fillers, short fillers and medium fillers. Long fillers make up the bulk of a cigar and thus you get an evenly burning cigar with the same taste to its end and short filler cigars are filled with all bits of tobacco, stem and other things which make it cheaper but it is hotter as you smoke and does not burn evenly. The medium fillers are as the name suggests a combination of the two.

The binder is generally a discarded wide leaf which cannot be used as a wrapper because of holes or deficiency in color or some other such problem. The binder holds all the bundles of fillers tightly into one whole cigar.

Cigars are also classified according to size and shape- from the extremely slim ones to the very fat ones and from the long ones to the short ones.
